SOCIAL WELFARE
The existing social welfare programmes in Kerala are the result of the continuous interventions of the Left Democratic Front Governments. As on today there are twenty welfare pension schemes in Kerala. Agriculture labour welfare programme in which sixteen lakhs of agricultural labourers are enrolled is the most important among them. In Kerala nearly fifty lakhs of labourers from various sectors including those from the handloom, toddy tapping, cashew, coir, beedi, khadi, fisheries, construction, motor transport, tailoring and weaker sections including widows, senior citizens etc are beneficiaries to these programmes.
In the unorganized sector we do not have such an equivalent social welfare programme in any other states in India. The social welfare programmes that the central Government is planning for the unorganized sector must be able to integrate with the existing schemes in Kerala.
